Oceanography of the Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean, one of the three major oceans of the world, was until recently relatively little studied and known. However, in the last three decades, a number of multidisciplinary studies on various aspects of the Indian Ocean have been documented. A large number of these studies has been carried out by Indian scientists, mainly from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), India. This volume is the outcome of the presentations made and discussed at the international symposium on the Oceanography of the Indian Ocean, 14-16 January 1991, at the National Institute of Oceanography in Goa. The symposium formed a platform for generating new ideas in the field of oceanography and a forum for discussions on matters of mutual interest. The 74 edited papers are mainly from the tropical regions of the Indian Ocean and are divided in 5 sections, covering ocean biology, chemistry, geology, physics and technology.
