Albemarle County was created in 1664 and its land mass covered the entire northeastern portion of the state. Six years later, its 4 precients were created and by 1722 it ceased to function as county. It land mass was carved up to create in part or whole the counties of: Chowan, Currituck, Paquotank and Perquimans.
