One Woman in a Field of Bees

Anna Mae Brown, a charismatic little girl with an unwavering faith in God, grows up in the poverty-stricken, racist times of the 1930s with prejudiced, atheist parents. In her young life, Anna is struck by a string of tragedies, from the death of her brother to an unexpected pregnancy and botched abortion that soon strip her of her God-fearing beliefs and leave her with nothing but despair-until she meets Mama Sweet.

When the father of Anna's children leaves her to marry another woman, Anna becomes agoraphobic and suffers from severe depression. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Anna finds that her neighbor, Mama Sweet, has been caring for her children. Mama Sweet, a kind elderly woman known for her fervent Christianity and her tasty caramel cake, teaches Anna's children how to cook and introduces them to the Word of God.

Anna's stubborn and deep-rooted atheistic attitude and Mama Sweet's strong, persistent determination to change her brings the two women head-to-head over religion.
