Old Roads of the Midwest takes the reader and traveler on a back-roads journey through the states of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Before the super highways, most roadways were trails used by Native Americans, pioneers, and farmers that were enhanced to meet the needs of the automobile. Today many of these rolling, tree-lined roads are designated scenic and/or historic. The author leads the way down nineteen such routes and describes historical events and colorful personalities at stops along the way. The rich history of the Great Lakes region is thoughtfully presented for the traveler's enjoyment. The Upper Peninsula copper country, the forts at the Straits of Mackinac, Thomas Edison's birthplace, the burial mounds of ancient cultures, and Ohio's Amish community are described in an enjoyable well-informed style.
