Dakota Miles is the son of a Sioux mother and an Irish-American father. On his fifteenth birthday, Dakota's mother takes him to the Last Stand Monument, location of the Battle of Little Bighorn, in the hopes of awakening him to his Sioux heritage. When Dakota jogs on his own to the next historic battlefield, a sudden storm makes him lose his footing and slide into the river. A powerful force pulls Dakota into the raging water where he loses consciousness. Bewildered, he awakens thinking he is part of one of the battlefield re-enactments as he is taken prisoner by two Sioux warriors. At the warriors' camp, Dakota is astonished to come face to face with none other than the great Chief Sitting Bull. Not knowing how he got there or how to get home, Dakota must play the obedient captive until he figures out what to do about his predicament.
