The history of the Federal Republic of Germany is retrospectively grounded in connection with names such as Joachim Ritter, Hermann Lubbe, Odo Marquard and Robert Spaemann. The author reconstructs their political Philosophie der Burgerlichkeit, whose fundamental outlines developed out of confrontation both with its own traditions and with the critical social theories of figures such as Jurgen Habermas.
