When her father died, singer songwriter Roxanne de Bastion inherited a piano she knew had been in her family for over a hundred years. But it is only when she finds a cassette recording of her grandfather, Stephen, playing one of his compositions, the true and almost unbelievable history of the piano, this man and her family begins to unravel.

The story follows Stephen from his days as a successful musician in Hungary in the 1930s to his bid for survival after he is left to die as a forced labourer in Siberia, through to imprisonment in concentration camps and back again. It is an utterly miraculous survival story, of a man and his instrument. Roxanne de Bastion traces her grandfather's steps by piecing together his cassette recordings, along with unpublished memoirs, letters and documents.
