"Pinter in Play" provides a survey of the diverse readings of the Harold Pinter canon, represented in terms of the major critical schools of the past 20 years, from New Criticism to deconstruction to post-structuralism. At the same time, this book is equally about the act or the art of literary criticism, and touches on the cultural, personal, sociological and philosophical bases of the diverse schools of criticism. Drawing on interviews with Pinter scholars, which provide insights into the relationship between critics' lives and their work, the text shows how criticism of Pinter enforces the critics' personal, professional and political affiliations and explains how the critics' own cultural histories and identities affect their literary preferences, interpretations and judgements.
