The book is a witty and surreal allegorical work satirizing the absurdities and contradictions of pre-World War II Lithuania. A mouse (Rato) narrates a history of his imaginary nation, populated by talking dogs, cats, rabbits and other creatures. Its political and social satire, veiled criticism of the authoritarian regime and subversive humor earned the book a cult status and comparisons with Gulliver's Travels and Alice in Wonderland.
