The author has written of his practice as a young doctor in a remote area of the Canadian prairies. He takes the reader briefly through his childhood years from 1939 as a wartime evacuee to his entry into medical college. There follows an outline of his medical education in Yorkshire's industrial city of Sheffield, followed by medical training and work in England and then in Baltimore Maryland. His single handed practice in Canada covered an immense land area where he was the only doctor, whose closest colleagues were many miles distant and where an air ambulance service was used, when weather and time permitted, to transfer seriously sick patients to specialist hospitals. On his return to the UK overcoming many unanticipated difficulties, he describes how he finds a home for his young family and gives a brief rsum of some of his experiences during those early years.
