This book describes the heroic deeds of one of the earliest 'freedom fighters' against colonial rule - Makhanda (also known as Makana, a corruption of his Xhosa name). Makhanda was imprisoned on Robben Island - where Nelson Mandela was later to spend so many years as a political prisoner - and was one of the few who attempted to escape from the island. He and his companions drowned in their quest for freedom. The book is beautifully illustrated with woodcuts, which emerged from a local project which combines history and art to stimulate economic development.
