Thirty of the Jewish Hungarian children who escaped the fate of thousands of their contemporaries during the Holocaust tell their stories. Most of them survived by hiding. Their chances of being discovered was mitigated by the German occupation of Hungary being of a much shorter duration than that of the rest of European countries.

Out of a population of 800,000 Jews before WWII, 570,000 were murdered, most of them in the notorious concentration camp of Auschwitz. Those who survived still bear the emotional scars, and in some cases physical ones, of that shameful period in Europe's history.

In this book, the 30 contributors who experienced the war as children, recall not the horror stories of the Holocaust that much has already been written about, but the kind of things children remember; frightening moments, unexpected kindnesses, ironies of fate, feelings of abandonment and the miracles that saved some and not others.

It is the Holocaust seen and remembered through the eyes of children.
