Sang Kancil is a small but clever animal called a mouse deer who uses his intelligence to outwit other animals in the jungle who are bigger and stronger than he is! In this story, Sang Kancil wants to eat some fruit on the other side of the river but his route is blocked by a group of hungry crocodiles. Can Sang Kancil work out a way to get across the water? Through simple text and striking illustrations, Sang Kancil and the Crocodiles is a perfect introduction to one of the most popular characters in Malaysian folklore. Sang Kancil wants to eat some ripe fruits on the other side of the river but can't get across. He calls all the crocodiles and tells them that Raja Solomon has ordered him to count all the crocodiles in the river. Kancil then jumps on the backs of the crocodiles until he reaches the other side. When the crocodiles realize that it was a trick by Kancil to get to the fruit, they are furious. After eating plenty of fruit, Kancil heads back to the river for a drink but finds the crocodiles waiting to attack him. Kancil searches the riverbank until he finds a bamboo bush. He drinks till he is full, but a crocodile manages to bite his foot. Kancil throws down a bamboo cane claiming that this is his foot and once again escapes from the crocodile's jaws. Tiger, however, who has been chasing Kancil and fighting with him, falls into the river and ends up being eaten by the crocodiles.
