It's 2009. Smartphones are fast becoming the next big thing; Tik Tok, Instagram, and "influencers" don't yet exist; and young Jeffrey James - almost 13, from Iowa - is living his dream: visiting California for the first time!

But his exciting tour of L.A. (guided by his cousin Margaret and their new friend Diana) takes a dark turn when his new phone starts spitting out strange texts - ones that point to places where crazy things happen: accidents, fires, even worse - that soon spiral out of control, putting them all in danger!

And as they desperately search for answers, one thing becomes clear: detective work is a lot harder than it looks, especially for such an unlikely trio of misfits. There's Jeffrey - the bookworm from the boonies; Margaret - his loner cousin with an attitude; and Diana - rich, beautiful, and bored (but with a really cool limo driver).
