Based upon thousands of personal letters from 1660 to the 1720s, this study reconstructs the changing country and London worlds of an English gentry family, and reveals intimate details about the social and cultural life of this period. It reveals unexpected findings about the impact of London, the importance of younger sons, and the subtle power of women over the social code.
