Spartakus

A historical novel set during the Roman Republic, 'Spartakus' tells the story of a gladiator who leads a rebellion against his Roman oppressors. Published in 1867, the novel was an immediate success, and has remained a classic of German historical fiction ever since. Its depiction of ancient Rome as a brutal and corrupt society influenced countless other authors in the years to come.
