Introduction Cognition has been studied extensively over ages by our great philosophers, thinkers and psychologists. It is not a new term to ponder on. There is so much in the ancient scriptures which we can utilize for the benefit of today's world. Sedlmeier and Srinivas (2016) researched on the Samkhya tradition of Ancient India and established the fact that Indian scriptures contain rich empirical theories of psychology which are amalgamated with religious and philosophical concept. Their research work mainly revolves around Samkhya and Yoga system of Indian tradition for better cognition. Not only Hindu and Buddhist tradition rather the philosophy of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Confucius etc. also laid emphasis on the development of cognitive functions. With the passage of time these philosophies became not reachable to many of us and there settled a communication and generation gap. The touch of the age old philosophies became strange. The Vedic philosophy has related cognition with knowledge, learning, memorization, creativity, purity of heart and mind. The oldest scripture of the globe, "The Rig Veda" composed in 1700B.C.E1000B.C.E, mentions about the goddess of wisdom and knowledge Saraswati. According to Rig Veda Saraswati is composed of two words Sar = all, Swati = speech. Hence Saraswati is called Vakeshwari which means goddess of speech. The scripture explains that meditating on the Saraswati mantra purifies speech and hence mind. Purification of mind is manifested as sharpness in the modern mental functions. Rig Veda has mentioned many Saraswati mantras for enhancing intelligence, wisdom, learning, mental growth, knowledge etc. The Buddhist worships, Saraswati as Manjushree also called Vakeshwar (by the Buddhist) which means the lord of speech. They believe in the male form of Saraswati. According to Abhidharma Pitak, one of the three baskets of wisdom in Buddhism (which explains meditation) chanting of Orange Manjushree mantra sharpens mind. It has been explained as a tongue exercise for monks who enter the monastery. It is said that the one who chants Orange Manjushree mantra is endowed with the blessings of Manjushree and he excels in creativity, learning, memorization, speech. He is able to purify his mind by purifying his speech. The technique followed is chanting of the mantra with visualization. ISRO scientists (2016) conducted research on the chanting of Saraswati beej mantra (The Jain program for memory) which reveals that chanting of Saraswati mantra for 36 days enhances memory. Saraswati is worshipped by different names and mantras in all the Asian countries major being India, Tibet, china, japan, Indonesia, Vietnam Korea etc
