Based on the authors 35 years working in the field of criminal justice, Standing in the Dark: Struggle and Hope for Victims of Violent Crime is a compilation of stories and events in his career that have introduced him to some of the bravest people he's known.Many of those that you will meet in this book have moved well beyond their victimization and have found a way to use their experience to better their own lives and affect countless others with their strength and their determination to not let what happened to them define who they are. Survivors of crime often feel as though they are completely alone in their experience. We have learned through the many years of work with crime victims, that validation of the pain and trauma is one of the most important things we can do to assist those that have been affected by crime. Throughout this book, the author provides the reader with personal experiences of what it is like to work with victim survivors of crime and what he's learned in working with these brave men, women, and children. He's written this book to honor their stories, to share their thoughts, through hours of interviews and being in the trenches with them learning and listening as to how he can become a better human being and a help agent in assisting them in their personal journeys.
