In Capetown, South Africa at the Monastery Hospital he received the Last Rites as he was not expected to survive treatment for malignant malaria and black water fever. He has also survived a heart attack and bowel cancer, and arriving in Agadir was stricken by a devastating earthquake on 29 February 1960.Bill stood for Parliament in Dover as an Independent Social Democrat supported by Dick Taverne, the former Labour MP who joined the SDP before becoming a Liberal Democrat. Over the years Bill has attended associate meetings in the House of Commons and support from Members. He is a Fellow of the British Institute of Innkeepers, Member of the International Professional Security Association, Member of the Palestine Solidarity campaign and Co-Founder of the National Pubwatch a police partnership to combat alcohol-related crime and disorder.
