Stones Cry Out

This story from the winner of Japan's premier fiction prize centers around an amateur geologist and bookseller who is told by a dying soldier at the end of World War II how a small pebble contains the Earth's history in its ephemeral matter. When the war ends, the geologist returns home and opens a bookstore, and what consoles him most in life is the collecting of stones.
