Rune is caught by vampire hunters and used as bait to lure starving vampires. Rune is on the cusp of death, content to let life go after living on the street for so many years, but this all changes when one vampire finds him. It is Syrus Valerius, a vampire wandering the earth for five hundred years, who finds this young boy and offers him eternal life.

Wakening as a vampire, Rune adjusts to having a place to call home and learning to control his thirst for human blood. Rune has conflicts with Syrus in the early months of his awakening, only to go through near-death experiences and Syrus saves his life over and over.

Over time, Syrus's identity as the King of vampires is revealed, and Rune opens up how he is left on the streets In his sleep, Rune dreams of his past, desperately trying to shake it off in the present. It finally catches up with the vampire, and Rune's biological father comes back, seeking to destroy the young vampire. Fighting Rune's father, Syrus's powers grow to protect his family.

Accepting each other as a family, both vampires seek a travelling group of Vikings searching for answers to help Syrus to control his new abilities.
