We all have a choice. Every conscious moment of every day, we get to choose. Whatever we have built up over a lifetime is stored as truths, and I find much of it isn't helpful for our happiness and success. Living well is about using our power to choose a better mindset when the one we have is not serving us or, worst case, is harming us. Many of us are locked into histories of lack and fear and limitation, but it takes one decision to say, "I want different for myself, and I am prepared to do what it takes to achieve the life I envisage."
I've had my share of rough experiences. Heart-wrenching betrayals, the pain of loss: loved ones, unemployment, failed businesses and the deaths of my mother and husband. I have realised that these conditions are more prevalent than we realise. They are experienced daily by people of all ages and from all walks of life. COVID-19 has just added fuel to the fire. I want us to be proactive in dealing with the trauma of this recent pandemic, as millions of people around the world need to rebuild or reinvent their lives.
Survivor's Lemonade is for anyone who is ready to take a step towards knowledge and action. We are always one decision away from an entirely new life. If you are battling with stress, trauma, loss, grief, anxiety, or depression, or if you just feel like your life and health could be better, this book is for you. If you are helping someone, go through any of these or similar conditions, the facts and guidelines are ready for use. Help is available; you need only reach out.
Victoria Joseph is certified African Psychologist with an African worldview, aware of the cultural norms of the continent, which have denied many Africans access to mental health care. She knows that, together, we can change the narrative that believes, "Life is difficult and seeking help is a sign of weakness." Mental illness is a disease like any other and it is treatable. Victoria received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Counselling from Daystar University. She is a registered member of the Kenya Counselling and Psychological Association.
