ABOUT THE BOOK
The Apocryphon of the Dispossessed is the use of poetry to unearth ghosts and events in the history of the African world which has refused to be silenced. In the anthology, the poet dialogued with the past by engaging events and actors and showing the complicity of Africans in the African condition, and documenting their triumphs.
The themes that are explored in the anthology include revolution, resistance, neo-colonial state, death, funerary rites, conflict.
It is noteworthy that history, despite its intellectual project of accounting for the remnants of the past, has excluded and silenced many actors and events at the different stages of historical production. This is more so for the experience of the subaltern, the indigenous people, the pre-literate people, and the individuals who were martyred in their quests of holding power accountable.
By their nature, Apocrypha are the written works that have been rejected or excluded in the canonization process. Consequently, they denote 'silencing' or 'hiding away'. However, the fact that they are silenced or hidden away or excluded does not mean that the accounts have accepted to go away. Indeed, they are living and available for those who want to know the unauthorized version of history.
