From halcyon train journeys between Bristol and Weymouth as a child in the 1950s, learning about railways through the train set and as a trainspotter during the teenage years to the mixed fortunes of a career with the Western Region of British Rail. This is the story of the making of a railwayman.

It covers time served as a railway engineering apprentice, life on a diesel maintenance depot, involvement with the introduction of the Iconic new High Speed Train and the unsuccessful Advance Passenger Train, leading to a long period as a Fleet Engineering Controller while making a foray into the world of the Territorial Army as a Weekend Warrior.

This volume begins to provide an insight into how people make the railways tick.
