The history of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, Michigan from 1853 to 2024. The book begins with a description of a log cabin in which Mass was held before the building of the city's first Catholic Church in 1857 and recounts the building of the first Cathedral dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle by Venerable Bishop Frederic Baraga in 1866. Provides information about the 1879 Cathedral fire and details the construction of the present-day Cathedral, rebuilt after a fire damaged the building in 1935. Includes renovations that took place in 2024.The stain glass windows that adorn St. Peter Cathedral are registered with the Michigan Stain Glass Census, sponsored by the Michigan State University Museum. They were added to the census in 1996. St. Peter Cathedral is the final resting place for Bishop Frederic Baraga who died in 1868. In 2014, his body was transferred to a marble Sarcophagus in the newly constructed Baraga Chapel.The Cathedral is open to the public and all visitors are welcome.
