As the author seeks to inform and entertain readers with his meanderings through some of the greatest cities on the continent, he hopes to inspire an enthusiasm for travel that goes beyond just checking off tourist sights on a list. Histories and cultures come alive as the author pursues the surge of empires from the Minoan trading civilization to the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the 20th century.
