Although sometimes causing severe and intractable engineering difficulties, weak rocks have not been the focus of a major international conference since the Symposium on Weak Rock in Tokyo, Japan in 1981. Since then, there have been significant advances, particularly with regard to rock mass classification, that were addressed at the Engineering Group of the Geological Society Conference held at the University of Leeds, UK in 1990. The resulting proceedings contain the refereed and edited contents of the 52 papers describing case histories, theoretical concepts and laboratory studies. The book deals with first with rock behaviour in terms of the intrinsic, or laboratory sample scale. Subsequent sections describe the classification of rock masses and an appreciation of the engineering behaviour of very complex rock masses is provided through the inclusion of informative case histories. This work should be of interest to practising engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers as well as to students of these and cognate subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
