"The Evil Men's Book Club" is a humorous paranormal horror novel about a group of bored thirty-something men who form a book club on a lark to read books "dudes want to read." It takes place in the Washington, DC area in the late 90s. The club only has two rules: (1) always meet at a bar, and (2) you don't have to read the book. During one of their club gatherings, the guys offend a homeless panhandler who curses them: they will get arrested, then lose their jobs, their women, and ultimately their lives.
The characters are suburban men going through the normal throes of marriage and fatherhood, but underneath their beer-fueled wise-cracking, secrets abound: jungle kidnapping PTSD, vigilantism, cross-dressing, alcoholism, race war prep, counseling to combat a "jinxed" love life, marital strife, prison, a struggling art studio, biker gang affiliation, illegal immigration, murder, old money, a mugging gone horribly wrong, loansharking, undercover ATF work, and last but not least, overzealous Christmas decoration. On top of these issues, there may be a real curse: members' lives slowly but surely begin to unravel.
The target audience for this book is Xers and Boomers, those brought up in the 90s, fans of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, those in recovery, and anyone with a perverse sense of humor. It is a story of survival and emotional growth, with an underdog vibe.
T.C. Schueler won awards and mentions for his first novel, "22 Dutch Road" including best horror novel for 2020 (Reader Views), and was a 2020 Independent Author Network finalist.
