The author, Abiel Holmes, was a Congregational minister and historian who was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In this book, he traces the development of Cambridge from its origins as a Puritan settlement to a vibrant commercial and cultural hub. He also profiles several of the key figures who shaped the city, including Harvard presidents and Revolutionary War heroes.
