The House of Many Faces was first written as an English Honors Thesis. It was created and structured to be a social inquiry. The house - this work of art and artistic expression became vehicle and avatar of a young woman's life. What had formed her, wounded her, held her, sustained her, medicated her and without malice, held her captive but also, most importantly, had kept her alive. A grand home seems to inevitably hold ego and prestige for most, but for an artist, creation is soul and succor. The house had to be revealed in a materialistic social construct, not an artist's construct so to reveal how beauty could be twisted and contorted into a prison, itself contained within a caste system that valued all things above the value of human life. The "things" needed their own capstone and chapter so the inverse could become the uverse to tear them open and deconstruct them. The chapter headings were designed to give importance and character to abstract concepts made into behavioral metaphors, too, embedded within the house itself. The house was a labyrinth with trappings and secrets. As with the myth of the minotaur, it wasn't supposed to ever release its key character. Bottles, dolls, a memento, sandals, a ring, money, gates - all became character and muse, angel and demon. At this stage , twenty years later, I the author do believe in the quantum field and the interconnectivity of everything. Energy and vibration create substance and matter made material by consciousness. So while crafting this tale , I was subconsciously hyper aware without the depth of understanding I have today. Yet the work is proof my subconscious understood how to connect the dots perfectly well and even weave them into a relatable storyboard that was an accessible series of parables without being didactic or parsimonious. The House of Many Faces tells of the universal in the particular (and yes that is an intentional play on words) with more relevance today than twenty years ago. Why?The teacher has her students. They weren't ready before. Neither was she.
