The Mark of a Christian

For several decades, it has become increasingly difficult to determine genuine Christian teaching, and therefore, genuine Christianity. It is even more difficult now. Pastors and teachers use "Christian" sounding messages and phrases that confuse non-Christians and Christians alike.
Is it possible for a person to determine who is and who isn't a true believer in Jesus Christ? If a person can, how do they go about doing that?
