The Novel of the Tupinamba Indian is the only novel of the Spanish Civil War written by a combatant in the civil war who was also a participant in the surrealist movement.A book valuable both for its historical perspective on the Spanish Civil War as it is for its literary merit as an innovative surrealist novel. Eugenio Granell was the last surviving Spanish surrealist artist and also had a profound political commitment. His art has been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1989, he had a major retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid. Granell was a friend and collaborator with Andre Breton, Benjamin Peret, Marcel Duchamp, Wilfred Lam, and Victor Serge. Both Eugenio Granell and the translator, David Coulter, have strong reputations as visual artists. This relationship will be exploited with events and talks at art galleries on both coasts.
