Great-Aunt Jane's niece, the doctor, has returned from America following her recent engagement. She resumes her visits to Jane, compelled to hear the rest of the story of why Leightham House has no roof and what has happened to Alice, her Great-Aunt's best friend. A story of addiction, death, love and betrayal unfolds, taking Alice up to the turbulence and violence of the Russian Revolution and back home to Scotland to live.
