The Prickly Rose

A dancer's dancer, choreographer, and a world renowned teacher, Viola Farber's legacy of movement still lives in the muscles of every dancer who was fortunate enough to study with her. Born in Germany in 1931, and trained to be a pianist most of her youth, Farber switched to dancing after meeting Merce Cunningham at Black Mountain College, and was a founding member of his company. The Prickly Rose gives the reader an insight into the woman, the artist, her teaching and her choreography. It follows her career from a "Stage Coach Lovely" in a bar in New Jersey, to becoming one of the most beloved modern dance legends of her generation.
