Beskrivning
This text analyzes British official thinking behind the UK's standing aloof from the moves after 1945 towards European economic collaboration, leading to the establishment of ECSC and the EEC in the 1950s. It deals with the later change of tack (1961), covers the organization in Whitehall for the negotiations with the Communities, and the major problem areas - the Commonwealth, British agriculture, financial implications of British membership, sovereignty, and the future of EFTA.

'Examines the documentary evidence dispassionately and reaches conclusions which not only illuminate a crucial period of British history but are also relevant to today"s debates about Britain"s place in the world.' - The Sunday Telegraph'This is an important addition to our knowledge of the recent past. No member of either house of parliament is fit to vote on British entry into the Euro without having mastered this book.' - Spectator'Alan Milward is the first scholar to make extensive, unrestricted use of official documents of all kinds to chart the evolution of British attitudes towards Europe ... The Rise and Fall of a National Strategy is consistently gripping and illuminating.' - TLS
