The Second Son is a biographical novel based on the life of the author's great-grandfather, Baron Leopold von der Borch, an aristocrat who left Germany in 1868 at the age of twenty-two to sail aboard the George Shotten to Australia. During the four months he spent at sea, he could not have imagined that he would never return to the family and home he loved.
Leopold’s story is one of challenge, courage, and hope. He was a police trooper in the early days of the Northern Territory, a detective and interpreter in South Australia, and the first official police photographer.
The Second Son is a story about a young man learning to stand on his own two feet.
