- A new voice in European literature: Balsam Karam’s work is strongly influenced by her personal experience as a writer of Kurdish ancestry, who spent her first years as a refugee throughout the Middle East before arriving in Sweden at age seven. She works as a librarian, and made her literary debut in 2018 with the feminist dystopia Event Horizon, which was awarded the Småland Literature Festival’s Migrant Prize and shortlisted for the Katapult Prize. The Singularity is her second novel and was shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Literature, among other prizes. Karam is an up-and-coming author who bucks traditional notions of Swedish literature, writing from a marginalized perspective.
- A literary, lyrical read: Translated by the award-winning Saskia Vogel, The Singularity is written in a dense, rhythmic, atmospheric prose. Karam combines literary aesthetics with complicated intellectual and political themes, bringing to mind artists like Jhumpa Lahiri, Ananda Devi, and Kate Zambreno, although her style is uniquely her own.
