The story of potjiekos

The story of potjiekos is about potjiekos, including what it is, a little about its history, and how to make it. Potjiekos is food that is cooked in a little iron pot over an open fire. It is very popular in South Africa.

The book takes the reader on a journey with this special food. It starts by explaining what the name 'potjiekos' means, how African farmers and Dutch settlers were using iron pots for cooking in the 1800s, and how the Voortrekkers carried the pots under their ox-wagons during the Great Trek. It then gives details on why potjiekos is unique to South Africa, the differences between potjiekos and stew, and a simple recipe to make your own potjiekos. 

A word help section at the end gives simple explanations for more complex words in the book, such as ingredients and tender, to expand the reader's vocabulary.

Each chapter has pictures with captions, such as African men eating food from an iron pot in 1910, drawings of the settlers in the 1800s and pictures of the steps to take when cooking potjiekos.
