On 27 June 2018, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court, effective 31 July 2018, ending a thirty-year tenure on the Court. On 9 July 2017, President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the federal Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by Justice Kennedys retirement.
