This book presents unorthodox and original proposals to promote cooperation between the world's poor and rich countries in combatting the widespread and growing poverty and unemployment which exist in both areas. The authors suggest a new type of Marshall Plan in which increased aid to the poor countries will help stimulate the economies of the rich countries through a feed-back process. The authors also outline programs which Third World countries should institute to promote their peoples' welfare. Finally, the authors propose that the United Nations should organize two world conferences: one to achieve a reduction of poverty in all countries and the second to relieve the over-indebtedness of the developing countries. Contents: Foreword by JaviEr Perez de Cuellar; Introduction: The Global Economic Crisis; The Downward Spiral of Impoverishment in the Third World; Prospects for the Next Decade; The Problem of Over-Indebtedness; What the Third World Countries Should Not Do to Promote the Welfare of their Peoples; Why and How Should the Rich Countries Aid the Poor Countries?; International Cooperation to Combat Poverty and Over-Indebtedness: A New Marshall Plan; Epilogue: The Impact of Our Proposals; Appendices; Bibliography; Index; Tables.
