Describes travels in China and the outward and homeward journeys. The origin and nature of the Jesuit-Dominican controversy over the Chinese rites are summarized in the editor's Introduction. The main pagination of this and the following volume is continuous. Volume II: A translation, edited from manuscript and printed sources, of the autobiographical portions of the Tratados Historicos, with interpolations from his unpublished 'Controversias' and other works. Includes Navarrete's account of the island of Santo Domingo (1679) and appendices on various matters such as the detention of the missionaries in Canton, 1666-70, and Navarrete's relations with Richard Cony, governor of St Helena. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volumes first published in 1962.
