The truth of the matter

Truth is a word we use with great familiarity. Yet generations of philosophers fail to agree what it means. I take it to be what the ancient Greeks were feeling their way towards - that which helps human beings fully to return to the world. We have abandomned our rightful place because we have capitulated before the all-conquering power of the 'self.' Life looks inwards to nostalgia and trauma, re-enforced by the arts. But philosophy emerged with the aim of taking us out of ourselves and into the world. Only there can we find the freedom that releases us from the over-animated, driven and lonely place many find themselves in today.
