When Johnny Carpenter lifted tiny Katjia Romanov, the girl they called Rawhide, from the ground where she had been knocked by the school bully, he could not have known how far the ripples of his kindness would reach.

His kindness carried her through years of pain and hardship and fuelled her desire to practice law and represent the poor and disadvantaged. In the end, the kindness he had shown her reaped an unexpected harvest.

The Woman They Called Rawhide takes place in a farming community and is based on the real stories of survival of some of those “unwanted and unwelcome” Russian families, Ukrainian families, and the powerful woman who you will read about in this story.
