This is the first collection of essays in any language on the wide-ranging second-century Roman miscellanist Aulus Gellius. The contributors are a mix of established and younger scholars including Gellian experts looking out with specialists in other fields looking in; combining traditional and new approaches, they place his achievements in context, compare the values he expresses with contemporary expectations, and illustrate his reception in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Scientific Revolution.
