They Told Me Not to Sing is the story of one womans struggle to make a different and better life for herself. Part one tells the story of what it was like growing up with an alcoholic mothera story of survival, rejection, hopes, and dreams. At age eleven, through days of bleakness and hope, she turned to the movies. The movies had taken her to new lands, shown her a whole different kind of life, and introduced her to new ideas and people.

Part two tells the story of a young girl who met her Prince Charming. With his ring on her finger, her dreams had come true and her prayers had been answered. She saw him as a pillar of strength, rather than a young boy scarcely nineteen years old. This is an account of Jennifer Wylers journey as a military wife.

Part three is set in the late 70s in Toronto. It tells the story of a forty-three-year-old woman who left a sheltered and privileged life to follow a life of nursing. Th is is the story of Jennifers personal evolution. She writes openly and intimately about her dreams and aspirations, her disappointments and failures, and how these emotions changed with her awakening consciousness
