Much as been written on Michelangelo. By 1970, the number of scholarly books and articles exceeded 4,000, approximately a tenth in English. In the past 25 years, the literature has grown exponentially, with a notable increase in English-language publications. Michelangelo's Roman career lasted from 1534 to his death in 1564. The principal works of these years include the realization of the great tomb of Julius II, the "Last Judgment," the "Pauline Chapel," and several works of sculpture including the "Bust of Brutus" and two late sculptures of the"Piet." These years also saw Michelangelo's maturation as an architect. A selection of articles explores Michelangelo's theory of architecture, as well as studies of his projects for the Capitoline Hill in Rome, the Porta Pia, and new St. Peter's.
