Transosseous Osteosynthesis

For the past 40 years, G.A.Ilizarov has been perfecting a system of orthopedics and traumatology based upon the tensioned-wire circular external skeletal fixator he invented in 1951. With his apparatus, Ilizarov has unlocked from within bone a previously hidden capacity to form new osseous tissue under appropriate conditions of stabilization, distraction and compression. This profusely illustrated book is the only available comprehensive description of the basic science, biomechanical principles, and clinical strategies of the Ilizarov method. The monograph contains numerous principles and techniques never before published. The text includes an exposition of the historical background of osteosynthesis and a review of the experimental basis of the author's biological discoveries: the influence of tension-stress upon the genesis and growth of tissues; and the effect of blood supply and loading on the shape-forming processes of bones and joints. Separate chapters focus on specific Ilizarov methods: fracture care, limb lengthening, deformity correction, the management of pseudarthroses and skeletal defects, and the treatment of osteomyelitis. Other section deal with Ilizarov's reconstruction tactics for congenital and acquired disorders of the hand, foot (two chapters) and hip (six chapters).
