This innovative study takes a close look at transport policy in Europe and analyses the policy emphases in different countries and the action of the EEC itself through its Common Transport Policy. The book covers all the major fields of transport, road, rail, shipping and air and contains a chapter on the special problems and challenges of the Channel Tunnel. The main emphasis, however, is on transport as a component of everyday life for 320 million European transport consumers - in environmental issues, road safety, walking, cycling and urban design. At each stage, national policy on such issues is reviewed and set against the policy, or lack of it, of the EEC, and the Common Transport Policy is criticised for its preoccupation with the promotion of international freight transport often at the expense of consumer interests.
