So beings one of the most fascinating nineteenth century accounts of travel in the Middle East. This work, originally published in 1823, comprises five extended letters from members of the expedition as it progresses from : (i) Cairo to the Second Cataract of the Nile; (ii) Cairo to Aleppo; (iii) Aleppo to Damascus; (iv) Damascus to Jerusalem; (v) Jerusalem to Acre. It is the immediacy of this form of narrative that provides the work with its greatest fascination, and this, along with the original maps, drawings and exquisite prints, makes this facsimile edition particularly attractive.
