Daniel R. Krause grew up in a fundamentalist Christian household in the USA in the 1960s and 70s. The home environment was austere: no TV, no radio and restricted social contact with the outside world. But there were social interactions within the circle of fellow Christians known as Plymouth Brethren. Krause's parents raised him with the conviction that the Bible was the inerrant Word of God and the source of truth.
As Krause grew toward adulthood, he began to question long-held convictions and closely held truths. Conflict arose with his parents. Physical and intellectual confrontations followed.
He began an intense exchange of written letters with his father's only sibling, Bud, who lived in central Europe. He, like Daniel, had questioned the fundamentalist-certitudes in which he had been raised.
This book is the story of a young man struggling to reconcile the adamant demands, enforced indoctrination and religious convictions of fundamentalist parents, with his own observations of the world and the universe.
"The reality of life, its tragedy, its complexity, its meaning, cannot even be confronted by these people. They are content, and I have no wish to disturb their contentment. I only ask them to leave me alone." - Bud
"Brother - only brother - of mine, believe what you wish, follow your beliefs as you think well, but stay human, I beg you." - Bud
